Home Sharing, Crime, and Public Safety: Evidence from Korea
Abstract: In this study, we examine the empirical link between home sharing, crime, and public safety. Based on Airbnb listing, index crime, and civil petition data from South Korea, we estimate the effect of home sharing on crime and public safety by utilizing the traditional two-way fixed-effects estimator and "robust" difference-in-differences estimator that exploit within-county, across-time variation in the number of Airbnb listings. Our preferred estimates from the recently-developed "robust" difference-in-differences estimator show that the growth of home sharing service significantly increases the total number of thefts and public-safety-related civil petitions filed by the residents, while its effects on other types of index crimes and civil petitions are more limited. These findings suggest that the growth of home sharing service may result in crime-related externalities that lower social welfare.
