[Proposal] Despite growing interest in the impacts of children on the labor market outcomes of women relative to men – known as the ‘child penalty’ – and family-friendly policies as a means to address it, empirical evidence on the individual support for such policies is lacking. This research aims to fill this gap by examining how people perceive and understand child penalty and family-friendly policies, what factors shape their support for policies, and what type of information shifts their policy support. To answer these questions, I plan to conduct incentivized survey experiments with a representative sample from Korea. A preliminary survey of 300 individuals shows that people believe differently about the magnitude of the child penalty and these beliefs correlate with their concerns about the problem and attitudes towards the necessity of government intervention. However, these beliefs do not translate into support for specific policies. Support for policies is best predicted by beliefs about the effectiveness of the policies and their adverse distributional impacts.
