Pacific Rim Conference 3: Financial and Economic Links and Institutions for Prosperity

Hawaii USA, May 14-17, 2014

The  Association  for  Comparative  Economic  Studies  (ACES),  the  Japanese  Association  for Comparative Economic Studies (JACES), the Korean Association for Comparative Economic Studies (KACES) and the Society for the Study of Emerging Markets (SSEM) invite the submission of papers for, and participation in, a major international conference, (PacRim 3) dealing with developments in the economic and financial systems of the Pacific Rim economiesas well as in the global economy. Empirical and theoretical papers related to the theme of the conference as well as papers dealing with institutions, political economy and policy issues are welcome. Participants are invited to submit individual papers for presentation or to propose an entire panel consisting of four papers.

Among the themes to be considered at the conference are:

-   Prospects for growth in the global economy and in the Pacific Rim region

-   Economic transition and system change

-   Sustainable development of the global economy and the Pacific Rim economies

-  Value chains and logistics- Pacific Rim economies’ links to each other and to the global economy

-   Institutional and regulatory innovations for economic growth and financial stability

-   Emerging economic and political conflicts as threats to prosperity

-   Regional economic cooperation lessons from Asia, Europe and the Americas

-   Evolution of financial systems and their regional and global linkages

-   Central banks and monetary and exchange rate policy

-   Emerging markets and rising interest rates – what are the risks?

PUBLICATION OPPORTUNITIES

As with past PacRim conferences, selected papers presented at the conference will be published in symposia or special issues or as regular papers in the journals of the sponsoring organizations. For PacRim 3these include Journal of Comparative Economics, Comparative Economic Studies, Japanese Journal of Comparative Economics (in Japanese), Emerging Markets Finance and Trade, and Seoul Journal of Economics. Any papers not selected for journal publication will be guaranteed (subject to successful revision) publication in an e-book that will be posted on the SSEM web site. CONFERENCE VENUE

The Conference will be held at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, 69-275 Waikoloa Beach Drive,Waikoloa, HI 96738-5711 (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/koamc-waikoloa-beach-marriott-resort-and-spa/). We have secured a special rate of US$150 (plus tax) per night for conference attendees, and this rate applies to 3 days preceding and following the conference, giving attendees the opportunity to take advantage of this resort’s outstanding facilities as well as of the attractions of the “Big Island” of Hawaii.

PAPER SUBMISSION AND REGISTRATION

Paper proposals, consisting of an abstract of not more than 250 words should be submitted to Josef Brada at josef.brada@asu.edu. Proposals will be reviewed by the Conference’s scientific committee on an ongoing basis. The deadline for submissions of abstracts is April 18, 2014 and final papers must be submitted before May 5, 2014 in order to be included in the conference materials. The number of papers that can be accommodated is limited, so please be sure to submit your abstract early.

REGISTRATION

The registration fee for attendees is US$250, which includes a cocktail reception on May 14 and a conference dinner/luau on May 17, 2014, coffee breaks and conference materials. Registration materials and information on how to reserve rooms at the conference rate will be sent to participants whose papers are accepted.
