Abstract: We study the impact of cultural similarity between individuals on prosociality and collaborative innovation. We validate that cultural similarity promotes knowledge sharing with OECD patent data, and experimentally analyze behavioral mechanisms underlying this result. Our novel laboratory experiment manipulates cultural similarity in terms of individualistic versus collectivistic beliefs and ritual to test its impact on behavior in sequential move prosocial and knowledge sharing games. Prosocial and knowledge sharing increase with common fate and public conformity to rituals, which serve as alternative mechanisms through which diverse effects on heterogeneous subjects operate. Cultural biases in knowledge sharing are mediated by the trust and altruism of leaders, and the efficiency concerns of followers.
