◈ Abstract
This research examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on decisions related to marriage, divorce, and childbirth. South Korea is currently grappling with a severe demographic crisis. The pandemic has triggered substantial societal changes, which may have influenced individuals' decisions regarding family formation and dissolution. To assess whether the pandemic has exacerbated the demographic crisis in South Korea, this study investigates the repercussions of the mass infection that occurred in February 2020 in Daegu province. Using the synthetic control method, the study investigates the treatment effect and finds no substantial influence on divorce and fertility rates. However, it reveals a noteworthy and persistent decline in the marriage rate among individuals aged 25-39 in Daegu, which could potentially lead to a more substantial reduction in fertility rates over the long term.
