Abstract: This study empirically investigates the effects of a policy change that lifted a restriction that required universities to admit students to groups of departments, rather than single departments. Consequently, the entry cohorts affected by the policy change had to specify a major from the very beginning of their college education. Using this policy-driven change in the timing of specialization, we find that early specialization reduces early career earnings by approximately 12%. An extensive investigation of various outcomes shows that the negative earnings effect is related to the role of "general human capital" amid labor demand changes.
