Abstract
This paper investigates the impact of Generative AI on individuals' task choices and, consequently, labor market outcome. Specifically, we conduct a laboratory experiment where participants make task choices to assess the impact of AI introduction on task choice and labor market outcomes. We hypothesize three main effects: (1) Generative AI introduction increases the likelihood of choosing high-skill tasks. (2) AI introduction leads to task mismatch, which can be mitigated by correcting cognitive biases through information intervention and repeated trial, resulting in reduced high-skill task selection and decreased task mismatch. (3) AI's exclusive benefit to high-skill tasks widens income inequality between low-skill and high-skill occupations.
Our findings largely confirm these hypotheses. We observe a significant shift towards high-skill tasks with AI adoption and a resulting increase in task mismatch, which is effectively reduced by our information intervention. Furthermore, our results show that AI widens inter-occupational income disparities while simultaneously compressing intra-occupational disparities among high-skilled task selectors.
