Using household data from the Panel Study of Family Dynamics in Taiwan, this paper examines how parental gender-related beliefs and gender role behaviors shape children’s gender beliefs from ages 16 to 38 and their full-time employment status from age 30. The findings show three main patterns. First, the intergenerational association in gender beliefs weakens as children age and becomes statistically insignificant in adulthood, and parental gender role behaviors exhibit no significant relationship with children’s beliefs. Second, daughters’ beliefs are more responsive to parental beliefs than sons’, and in families where the father’s share of housework is below the median, mothers’ paid working hours are associated with slightly stronger son preference among daughters. Third, parental beliefs are not significantly associated with children’s full-time employment from age 30; instead, daughters’ full-time employment is significantly positively associated with the father’s share of housework, while sons’ full-time employment is significantly positively associated with the mother’s paid work time. Together, these results highlight the gender-specific channels through which parental beliefs and behaviors shape children’s long-term gender attitudes and labor market outcomes.
